What Is ISO 14067?

An international framework for Product Carbon Footprint

ISO 14067 establishes principles, requirements and guidelines for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of a product (CFP) in a manner consistent with international life cycle assessment standards.

The assessment focuses specifically on the climate change impact of a product and expresses the result in CO₂ equivalent (CO₂e).

ISO 14067 can be applied to products, components, materials and services across different industrial sectors.

What Does a Product Carbon Footprint Include?

The carbon footprint is built from the product's life cycle

Depending on the defined system boundary, the assessment considers greenhouse gas emissions associated with relevant stages and processes in the product life cycle.

These may include:

Raw materials and purchased components
Material production, upstream processes and supplier-specific information where available.

Manufacturing
Electricity, fuels, process energy, consumables, production losses and other relevant operations.

Transport
Transport of materials, components and products where included within the system boundary.

Use stage
Where relevant to the assessed product and required calculation scope.

End of life
Treatment, recycling, recovery or disposal where included within the assessment.

The calculation boundary must match the purpose of the assessment

Before the calculation begins, the product and assessment scope must be clearly defined.

Depending on the purpose and applicable requirements, a PCF may cover different portions of the product life cycle.

ISO 14067 PCF Methodology

From activity data to a traceable carbon footprint

An ISO 14067-based assessment requires more than applying emission factors to a list of materials.

PCF-X structures the calculation around relevant methodological elements including:

The objective is to produce a PCF result whose data sources, calculation methodology and assumptions are transparent and traceable.

Primary and Secondary Data

Product-specific data improves the quality of the assessment

Where available and appropriate, the calculation uses primary information representing the actual product and manufacturing processes.

This can include:

  • Product mass and composition
  • Material quantities
  • Purchased components
  • Electricity consumption
  • Fuels and thermal energy
  • Manufacturing processes
  • Production losses and scrap
  • Consumables
  • Transport data
  • Supplier-specific PCF information

Where primary information is not available, appropriate secondary life cycle inventory datasets and emission factors may be used and documented.

From Data Collection to PCF Result

  1. Define the product and objective
    We establish what is being assessed and why the PCF is required.
  2. Define the system boundary
    Relevant life cycle stages and processes are identified.
  3. Collect and review data
    Product, material, manufacturing, energy, transport and supplier information is collected and assessed.
  4. Model and calculate the PCF
    The life cycle inventory is developed and greenhouse gas emissions are quantified.
  5. Document the result
    The PCF result, methodology, data sources, assumptions and limitations are documented.
